Not sure of your next step?
If you aren’t happy in your current career but don’t have many ideas about what else you could do, Adult Directions is a good place to start.
Log in and use the likes/dislikes matching part of the program, or try the skills matching. You’ll be presented with a list of careers which suit your interests and match your transferable skills. Read a few of the careers profiles suggested by the program. Are there any that appeal from first impressions? Do any of them make you think, ‘I’ve always wanted to be that’?
If your matched list of careers does include some you’re interested in, that’s great but it’s only the first step. You can do further research by using Careerscape. Again, this comes as part of your subscription.
Within Careerscape, you’ll get the same job profiles you’ve looked at in Adult Directions plus loads of additional features to help you with your career research.
Case study interviews are one of the most useful extra features. To get started, check three of the profiles suggested by Adult Directions and look at the corresponding case studies. It’s always useful to hear from someone actually in one of the jobs you’re interested in. Look at the advice they give, but also look at what they like and dislike about the job. Try to get a fuller picture of the area you want to work in.
Career videos are another useful extra in Careerscape, so as well as reading what people have to say about their careers, you can also see what it is they do and hear them talk about their jobs.
