Hotel Room Jobs

Domestic Services Manager

A domestic services manager is usually known as head housekeeper in a hotel. Their job is to make sure that all the guest bedrooms are kept clean, tidy and well maintained. They supervise the room attendants who do the actual cleaning.

The head housekeeper tells the room attendants which rooms need cleaning, and then checks afterwards to make sure the rooms have been cleaned thoroughly. If there is a problem with one of the rooms, the housekeeper sorts it out – if the shower isn’t working properly, for example.

Head housekeepers make sure that the room attendants have all the equipment and materials that they need, including clean laundry to make the beds with. They often supervise the work of laundry staff as well. They are usually in charge of the money that the hotel puts into the housekeeping budget, and must make sure that it is spent wisely.

Hotel Room Attendant

Hotel room attendants clean the bedrooms in a hotel, and usually the corridors that lead to them as well. The room attendant changes the bed linen and makes the bed, vacuums and dusts, and cleans the bathroom.

They also re-stock the room with items such as tea and coffee, soap and towels. They check that items such as the television and kettle are working. When they have finished cleaning the rooms, the head housekeeper checks that they are up to standard.

Laundry Assistant

Laundry assistants operate the machinery used to wash, dry and press the items that are brought to the laundry. In a hotel, this is mainly bed linen, towels, tablecloths and napkins.

The laundry worker sorts the items that need washing, loads them into the washing machines and sets the machines going. When the washing cycle has finished, the laundry worker puts the wet washing into dryers.

When the washing is dry it must be pressed (this is also usually done by a machine), folded and bagged up, ready to go back to the housekeeping department.
